Who are we?

We're the Scottish Government's economic and community development agency for a diverse region which covers more than half of Scotland.

Our unique integration of economic and community development is central to our success in generating sustainable economic growth in every part of the Highlands and Islands, particularly in remote areas.

Our purpose is to build and sustain a greener, fairer and more resilient region that benefits everyone. We work with communities, enterprises, and stakeholders to unlock our region’s potential for growth and progress, while driving fair work and net zero practices. We will deliver through focusing on our four pillars: People, Place, Planet and Prosperity. You can find out more about our purpose and priorities in our Strategy. 

We have administrative offices in Inverness, Benbecula and Auchtertyre, as well as local area offices in Forres, Fort William, Thurso, Golspie, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Stornoway, Lochgilphead and Portree.

We are committed to meeting Carer Positive and Disability Confident standards. We develop our young workforce and support the Young Person’s Guarantee. And we are recognised nationally as an award-winning family friendly employer by Family Friendly Working Scotland, Carers Scotland, Working Families UK and the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework.

The Fair Work Convention’s vision is that by 2025, people in Scotland will have a world-leading working life where fair work drives success, wellbeing and prosperity for individuals, businesses, organisations and communities. We are committed to providing a workplace that is built on the five key dimensions of Fair Work: effective voice, opportunity, security, fulfilment and respect.

In line with our net zero ambitions, we are working towards achieving a silver Carbon Literate Organisation status. We now have 113 members of staff fully accredited as carbon literate, with a further 17 members of staff awaiting their accreditation after completing the training.

contactScotland is Scotland’s online British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting service for public sector authorities and is funded by the Scottish Government.

BSL users can contact us via an online BSL/English interpreter through this service.
